About Joe Nation

Joe NationJoe Nation has spent his career working to solve the biggest problems facing California and the country.

He is currently a Climate Change Advisor for the environmental consulting firm, ENVIRON International, and an international expert on carbon markets, carbon market policies and carbon finance. Nation also teaches health care, climate change, and public policy at Stanford University.

Nation served in the California State Assembly representing Marin and Sonoma counties from 2000 to 2006 where he focused on passing strong environmental protections and climate change legislation, including serving as Principal co-author of AB 32, California's Global Warming Solutions Act.

During his time in the Assembly, Nation also worked with his colleagues to pass nearly 50 bills that he authored, including greenhouse gas labeling for autos, fuel efficiency standards for tires, and tax incentives for alternative energy. He has also successfully authored legislation to improve and expand health care, transportation and education and is an outspoken advocate for fiscal responsibility and accountability within state government.

Nation graduated with a B.A. in Economics, German and French from the University of Colorado. He earned a Masters in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and subsequently received a Ph.D. in Public Policy Analysis from RAND Graduate School. He then pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University.

Nation has eighteen-year old twin daughters, Kristen and Alexandra.
